In the post-apocalyptic world of the Fallout series, paper currency has lost its value. Instead, players use bottle caps to buy and sell things in the video game.
But one fan of the series sent the developer behind the games, Bethesda, a bunch of bottle caps in the real world -- hoping to secure a copy of Fallout 4.
"Fallout 3 was my favorite game for several years, so I made the rational choice to start saving up bottle caps," he said in a post on image-sharing site Imgur, where he goes by the username GatorMacheteJr. "Turns out 4.5 years of undergrad and 3 years in a Master’s program leads to a lot of drinking. It ended up being 11.2 pounds of bottle caps." His pitch gained traction online -- getting more than a million views and write ups in the gaming press.
And now the game company is honoring his pre-order.

Bethesda global community lead Matt Grandstaff tweeted out a picture of the haul in his office and confirmed that the company accepted the bottle caps as payment.
GatorMacheteJr also celebrated the victory back on Imgur.
But fellow Fallout fans shouldn't rush to mail off more caps to the company: According to the Imgur update, Grandstaff told GatorMacheteJr his attempt was being honored because he was the first person to give it a try. A Bethesda spokesperson confirmed to us late Thursday that it won't be honoring future bottlecap pre-order requests.
